FAQ: I’m sick with flu, can my cat get the flu, too?

The flu season this winter seems to be worse than average. One of the most frequently asked questions we get from new cat owners is if the human flu can also affect cats.

I’m sick with flu and worried that my new kitten (or cat) will get the flu, too. Is that possible?

We have some good news. Although cats are susceptible to flu (feline flu) they cannot catch a flu from you being sick. Cat or feline flu cannot be transmitted to humans and human flus and colds (the human influenza virus or common cold viruses) cannot be transmitted to cats.

So have a warm drink, an extra dose of vitamin C and snuggle under cozy blankets with your best friend – your feline friend, and don’t worry your cat cannot catch your cold.
